Pakistan fumes over Canadian PM’s remarks abusing army chief Gen Bajwa

Pakistan has strongly reacted to the statement of Canadian parliamentarian Tom Kmiec targeting Army Chief Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa with Defence Minister Khawaja Asif saying the Canadian government must have taken the notice of the remarks.

Kmiec, associated with Canada’s Conservative Party, had taken exception to the planned visit of Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa to Canada that was later canceled due to Covid-19, saying the “visit was approved with a taxpayer money of $50,000”.

“Gen Bajwa has been accused of toppling two governments in Pakistan, the military under his command has been involved in human rights abuses, and extra-judicial killings and has links to terror groups,” Kmeic .

He asked the Canadian defence ministry if the visit was appropriate for the top Pakistan army official.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, in his speech to the NA on June 27, hit out at the Canadian MP for his disrespectful statement.

He said he was also aware of Canada’s internal situation but “I will refrain from talking about it because we have good ties”.

He said the Canadian government should have apologised for remarks of its MPs.
