Here’s why Pakistan govt blocked the social media platforms

In a dramatic development on Friday noon, Social media platforms Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp and Telegram were suspended in Pakistan on Friday (April 16) from 11am till 3pm.

The Interior Ministry said that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority had suspended the social media platforms on its instructions.

The action was taken after a letter was sent to the PTA chairperson by  the interior ministry.

The ministry, in the letter, had requested the PTA to take action against the issue “immediately”.

The reason for the suspension of the services is not clear as of yet. However it is believed that the social media platforms were suspended in view of government action against the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) after it announced to retaliate to the government move to ban the party.

In view of impending deterioration in law and order situation, the government suspended the social media services to ‘prevent propaganda machines from creating anarchy’ and stop citizens from sharing videos and pictures of any protest or demonstration by the TLP, sources told KhabarNaamaa.
